The balsam fir is the most northerly of all the representatives of the Abietaceae family. It is characterised by its high resistance to cold. The essential oil of balsam fir contains many monoterpenes (not only pinenes but also a high percentage of limonene) and esters.

The properties of balsam fir essential oil are comparable to those of Scots pine in terms of breathing. The high percentage of monoterpenes explains its oxygenating and balsamic action and, of course, its strong air sanitising effect. The esters add an antispasmodic action. Abies balsamea is appreciated for relieving difficult breathing due to asthma, chronic bronchitis, etc.

This essential oil is simple and straightforward, which is already evident from its woody, resinous and fruity aroma. Like many softwoods, balsam fir will combat stressful states accompanied by mental exhaustion and chronic fatigue.
