How to diffuse essential oils?

Diffusion is one of the best ways to enjoy all the benefits of essential oils.

Biochemically, essential oils diffuse throughout the body via the respiratory tract, acting on our immune system, general tone and respiratory comfort. Through olfaction, diffusion also acts on our emotional states and our psyche. Finally, diffusing certain essential oils is highly effective for purifying indoor air and preventing the proliferation of microbes, particularly during winter epidemics.

How to diffuse essential oils?

To enjoy the benefits of diffusing essential oils, use an essential oil diffuser. There's a wide variety of diffusers to choose from, including nebulisers, atomisers, electric car diffusers and capillary diffusers! Before making your choice, always opt for a cold diffuser, so as not to alter the properties of the essential oils.

The most expert: the nebulizer dispenser

To make the most of the virtues of essential oils, the ultrasound diffuser breaks down the essential oil into microscopic droplets and, without heating, produces an aerosol with maximum effectiveness due to the concentration obtained. This method is the most effective for aromatic diffusion.

In addition, small diffusers for the office or car are perfect for enjoying the scents of essential oils!

Which essential oils to choose for diffusion?

Citrus essential oils:

These are real sunscreens when diffused: sweet orange, red mandarin, grapefruit, lemon, lime and bergamot essential oils. With their fruity, tangy aroma, citrus essential oils chase away the worries and little clouds of everyday life while purifying the air, especially lemon and grapefruit essential oils, which have the strongest antiseptic action.

Softwood essential oils, the air of summits:

They carry with them a sense of verticality and oxygenate us: Scots Pine, Balsam Fir, Maritime Pine, Siberian Fir and Black Spruce essential oils. With their aromas of resins, woods and high-altitude forests, they provide respiratory comfort and ‘lift’ us up when we're feeling extremely tired. Wonderful for winter diffusion!

The essentials for warding off winter ailments:

Essential oils of Ravintsara, Niaouli, Saro, Tea tree, Eucalyptus radiata, Eucalyptus Smith, Eucalyptus globulus, Rosemary cineole: essential oils with intense aromas that support the immune system, fight against winter viruses, purify the atmosphere in rooms and support breathing.

Warm, inviting fragrances that encourage conviviality and letting go:

With their woody or floral aromas, their scents relieve anxiety and encourage conviviality: essential oils of ylang-ylang, cinnamon, patchouli, ginger and hô wood. Highly aromatic, they are always used diluted in milder essential oils, such as sweet orange essential oil!

Anti-stress essential oils:

Ideal for olfaction, these essential oils with their fine, pleasant scents effectively combat stress, anxiety and nervousness: fine lavender essential oil, lemon litsea, petit grain bigarade, lemongrass, rhododendron, garden marjoram.

All the organic citrus essential oils listed above are also essential for combating stress.

How do you clean your essential oil diffuser?

Take the time to clean your nebuliser regularly to enjoy the full benefits of the essential oils you diffuse and to keep it in good working order.

We recommend that you clean your diffuser every fortnight, by pouring half a centimetre of cleaner/dissolver for nebulisers and ceramics into the glassware and then running your device for ten minutes with a window open. This mixture is harmless and pleasantly scented with lavender essential oil.

Then turn off the machine, plug the glassware with your thumb, shake it for a few seconds and discard the remaining cleaner.

Precautions for use:

  • never diffuse essential oils in the presence of children under the age of 3
  • always follow the precautions for use of the essential oils you diffuse
  • as a general rule, do not diffuse essential oils in the presence of pets
  • when diffusing, do not exceed 20 minutes in a row, no more than three times a day
  • do not place your nose or eyes directly above the diffuser
  • Do not leave your diffuser running while you sleep. To diffuse essential oils before going to bed, diffuse them in the bedroom 30 minutes before going to bed.
  • Be careful when diffusing essential oils in the presence of sensitive people (asthma, allergic conditions, epilepsy, frail elderly people). Always check that diffusing essential oils does not present any risks for them.
