Throughout the centuries, medicinal plants have always accompanied women through the cycles and seasons of life. This tradition of women herbalists highlights the benefits of sage, Roman chamomile, rosemary and evening primrose on the physical and emotional balance of women.
In aromatherapy, essential oils and hydrosols can relieve and help to soothe menstrual pain, hormonal imbalances and to live fully and serenely through the menopause period.

Hormonal balance
Clary sage* essential oil is known to help restore female hormonal and emotional balance.
Massage oil with sage, to be massaged on the lower abdomen
- 10 drops of organic clary sage essential oil
- 10 drops of organic Roman chamomile essential oil
- 20 drops of organic True lavender essential oil
- 48ml of organic arnica oily macerate
Precautions for use of this massage oil:
- Never use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
- The elbow test is recommended before skin application to check that no allergic reactions occur.
- Not recommended in case of a history of hormone-dependent cancer.
Rosemary verbenone essential oil is also recognised for its regulating action on the female hormonal cycle (premenstrual syndromes, menopausal disorders).
For oral use, André Bitsas recommends the following mixture. In a 30 ml bottle, pour:
- 12ml of solubol 15ml rosemary verbenone hydrosol
- 1ml essential oil of lemon verbena
- 1ml rosemary verbenone essential oil
- 1ml rose geranium essential oil
Take 20 drops of this mixture in a glass of water, 3 times a day (for a maximum of 7 days).
- Do not use in pregnant or breastfeeding women.
- Sensitive persons with a sensitive liver: prefer the hydrosol.
- Contraindicated in cases of mastosis and cancerous pathologies.
A cure of hydrosols to regulate the cycle
Combine verbena, rosemary verbenone and rose geranium hydrosols in equal parts. Store your preparation in a bottle in the refrigerator.
Take 2 tablespoons of the mixture in 1 litre of water, to be drunk during the day, as a 21-day cure.
Regulating and restoring your hormonal cycle after stopping a contraceptive
To help restore hormonal balance after stopping an oral contraceptive, Andr? Bitsas recommends a course of clary sage hydrosol internally, at a rate of 2 tablespoons of hydrosol in a litre of water to be drunk during the day, as a three-week course.

Painful periods
Chamomile essential oil is interesting for relieving painful periods, irregular periods and the absence of periods. It is recommended as a localized massage on the lower abdomen: 5ml in 45ml of St. John's wort macerate, when needed or for 10 days to encourage the onset of menstruation.
Caution: Do not use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Verbena hydrosol to soothe cramps in the lower abdomen
Pour a teaspoon of verbena hydrosol into a glass of water at room temperature or lukewarm. Drink when needed, maximum three times a day.
For painful periods, a course of verbena hydrosol is recommended for 10 days before the onset of the period.
Living well in the menopause
Hydrosols to relieve menopausal problems and hot flashes
Combine equal parts sage, clary sage, rose and peppermint hydrosols. Store in a bottle in the refrigerator. Dilute 2 tablespoons of the mixture in 1 litre of water, to be drunk throughout the day, as a 21-day treatment.
Evening primrose vegetable oil, for hormonal balance
A well-known feminine oil, evening primrose vegetable oil accompanies the menopausal period due to its hormonal regulating action.
It is recommended to ingest 500mg of evening primrose vegetable oil internally, 2 to 3 times a day, for 21 days, to be repeated several times a year during menopause.
Geranium hydrosol, to soothe hot flashes
Dilute 1 teaspoon of hydrosol in a glass of warm or room temperature water to relieve hot flashes.
Mood swings and low morale
With their sunny aromas, organic citrus essential oils help to overcome the blues. The essences of bergamot, grapefruit and mandarin, or essential oils with lemony notes: verbena, litsea and lemon balm. Use by olfaction in a pocket inhaler, or with a roll-on diluted at 3% in a neutral vegetable oil, to be massaged on the wrists and breathed in when the mood is low.

Hormonal acne
Depending on the period of the cycle or when hormonal contraception is stopped, it is common to see the appearance of the skin change. Excess sebum, pimples, blackheads, the skin struggles to find its balance under the effect of hormonal variations. Skin care products to adopt for a clear skin: green clay, jojoba, black cumin and hazelnut vegetable oils, tea tree, palmarosa and lavender essential oils, clary sage, rosemary and fine lavender hydrosols.
Hormone-related snacking
Grapefruit essence: as an olfaction or 1 drop under the tongue, can help to stop compulsive snacking.
Rose geranium hydrosol, at a rate of one teaspoon in a glass of water, will help to relieve the craving for sugar in particular.
